Mega Factories
Have you ever wondered how blueberries are grown and processed on a large scale? More than 200 million pounds of blueberries are produced each year in North America. In this episode, we will explore how the blueberries are harvested with huge machines, and how they are sorted, washed, and packed. Advanced AI sorting scanners play a crucial role in separating ripe berries from unripe ones during harvesting. These scanners use computer vision to analyze the color, size, and firmness of each berry in real-time, ensuring only the highest-quality fruit is collected.
On large-scale blueberry farms, mechanical harvesters are often used to efficiently pick ripe berries. These machines use vibrating rods or combs to gently shake the berries off the bushes, and the fruit falls onto conveyors or catchment systems.
At the processing plant, the berries go through a sorting process to remove any remaining leaves, stems, or unripe berries. The berries then undergo a thorough washing process to remove any dirt or debris.
Packaging is also a crucial step: cleaned and sorted blueberries are then packed into various packaging formats, such as clamshells, punnets, or bulk containers. The packaging is designed to protect the berries during transportation and maintain their freshness.

Heineken Lager Beer (Dutch: Heineken Pilsener), or simply Heineken (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦɛinəkən]), is a pale lager beer with 5% alcohol by volume produced by the Dutch brewing company Heineken International. Heineken is well known for its signature green bottle and red star.
On 15 February 1864, Gerard Adriaan Heineken (1841–1893) got his wealthy mother to buy De Hooiberg (The Haystack) brewery in Amsterdam, a popular working-class brand founded in 1592. In 1873 after hiring a Dr. Elion (student of Louis Pasteur) to develop Heineken-A Yeast for Bavarian bottom fermentation, the HBM (Heineken's Bierbrouwerij Maatschappij) was established, and the first Heineken brand beer was brewed.
In 1875 Heineken won the Medaille D'Or at the International Maritime Exposition in Paris, then began to be shipped there regularly, after which Heineken sales topped 64,000 hectolitres (1.7 million U.S. gallons), making them the biggest beer exporter to France.
Since 1975 most Heineken brand beer has been brewed at their brewery in Zoeterwoude, Netherlands. In 2011 2.74 billion liters of Heineken brand beer were produced worldwide, while the total beer production of all breweries fully owned by the Heineken Group over all brands was 16.46 billion liters globally.Sold in more than 170 countries, Heineken is the world's most international premium beer. It has been incorporated with numerous beer brands from different countries all over the world including, Mexico, China, and Africa.

Glass has been an important material in human societies since its invention over 4,000 years ago. But how is glass made, and why is it still so essential today? This documentary explains how one mega factory in central Taiwan produces high-tech glass products for diverse industries around the world.
Since the opening of its first factory in Hsinchu, Taiwan, the Taiwan Glass Company has expanded to open a total of five factories across northern and central Taiwan. Today, one of these factories houses the first and only float glass line in Taiwan. But how did Taiwan become one of the world’s top glass producers?
Hsinchu, Taiwan is famous for its semiconductor industry. However, in the 1970s, the city was a prominent producer of string light bulbs and decorative glass, producing over 70% of the world’s supply. This industrial dominance was made possible in part due to Taiwan’s large deposits of silica sand, a key material in glass production.
Today, Taiwan Glass’s five factories produce glass products for a variety of applications, including bottles and jars, architectural glass and glass fiber. Each factory employs specialized technology to produce the best glass of its kind. In this documentary, we tour Taiwan Glass to witness their production processes and find out what sets this mega factory apart from its competitors.
Beyond producing new glass, Taiwan Glass also runs its own glass recycling facility, enabling the company to utilize recycled glass in its products without any loss in quality. And when it comes to architectural glass, the company produces all kinds, with various coatings and finishes for designers to choose from. In fact, coated glass panes produced by Taiwan Glass can be seen in the glass curtain walls of many prominent and luxurious skyscrapers worldwide. We show you how these functional coatings are applied and how additional processes allow the glass panes to withstand sun, wind, and heavy storms while looking beautiful for decades.
So, are you ready to find out how glass is made? Then what are you waiting for? Check out our in-depth tour of this Taiwanese mega factory to see why glass remains a crucial material in our societies today.

Making frozen pizzas for mass distribution involves a series of automated steps: Large mixers combining flour, water, yeast, and other ingredients create a smooth dough in large quantities.
The dough is then automatically divided into portions which are transported on long conveyor belts to sheeting machines, which flatten and shape them into precise, circular bases suitable for various pizza sizes.
Automated sauce applicators evenly spread tomato sauce on the dough, adjusting quantities based on pizza size. Toppings are added through automated systems, ensuring even distribution of cheese, pepperoni, vegetables, and other ingredients.
The pizzas then enter large ovens, operating at precise temperatures, to achieve a crispy crust, melt the cheese, and cook the toppings. After baking, the pizzas cool down on conveyor belts, passing through freezers and inspection stations equipped with cameras and sensors to ensure quality. Packaging stations are also where machines place them in cardboard boxes or plastic wraps, sealing in freshness.
The reported increase in U.S. sales of frozen pizza from approximately 6.06 billion U.S. dollars to 6.77 billion U.S. dollars between 2021 and 2022 underscores the growing popularity and demand for this convenient food option. Several factors could contribute to this upward trend. Firstly, the convenience and ease of preparation associated with frozen pizzas make them an attractive choice for consumers with busy lifestyles, especially amid the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
