Chicago Dept. of Streets & Sanitation Elgin Pelican Street Sweeper [04.30.2014]
Chicago Dept. of Streets & Sanitation Elgin Pelican Street Sweeper [04.30.2014] Machines 49 विचारों • 1 साल पहले

It's finally Springtime in Chicago, at least according to the calendar, and that means it's time for street sweepers to tackle Chicago's streets and clear the muck of dead leaves left over from the fall that accumulated along with garbage along the city's curbs on main thoroughfares and residential streets. We received one Hell of a pounding this year from Mother Nature with a prolonged winter that saw near-daily snowfalls that accumulated to total the third-snowiest winter on record in Chicago history. I know I speak for many Chicagoans when I say that I'm glad to see the grass and the ground that was too often covered with a layer of white this winter.

Now back to the street sweeper itself, here's some information off Elgin's website:

The Elgin Pelican broom sweeper is a three-wheel mechanical sweeper based on one of the original street sweeper designs, which has been continuously improved since 1914, meeting the highest sweeper standards. Maneuverability, economy, serviceability and single lane dumping with a sweep system that easily handles heavy compacted dirt and bulky debris are all features of the Elgin Pelican. An isolation-mounted cab provides a cleaner, quieter operation, and the improved 360-degree visibility and easier access for service and maintenance make the Elgin Pelican an industry standard in road sweepers.

The Pelican is now available as an optional alternative fuel sweeper: Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The Pelican also has a waterless dust control option.

The Elgin Pelican is specially suited for applications that require extreme maneuverability due to congested areas, heavy debris such as that found in northern climate spring clean up, and bulky items up to 9" long. The waterless version of this street sweeper can do all this without the use of dust control water, allowing for year around operation and use on water reactive compounds like Portland cement.

Engine: John Deere® 4045TF150 | 55 KW
Dumping Height Max: Variable up to 9 ft. 6 in. | 2895 mm

How Cement Is Made? (Mega Factories Video)
How Cement Is Made? (Mega Factories Video) Machines 28 विचारों • 1 साल पहले

A cement is a binder, a substance used for construction that sets, hardens, and adheres to other materials to bind them together. Cement is seldom used on its own, but rather to bind sand and gravel (aggregate) together. Cement mixed with fine aggregate produces mortar for masonry, or with sand and gravel, produces concrete. Concrete is the most widely used material in existence and is behind only water as the planet's most-consumed resource.

Cement manufacturing is a complex process that begins with mining and then grinding raw materials that include limestone and clay, to a fine powder, called raw meal, which is then heated to a sintering temperature as high as 1450 °C in a cement kiln. In this process, the chemical bonds of the raw materials are broken down and then they are recombined into new compounds. The result is called clinker, which are rounded nodules between 1mm and 25mm across. The clinker is ground to a fine powder in a cement mill and mixed with gypsum to create cement. The powdered cement is then mixed with water and aggregates to form concrete that is used in construction.

Clinker quality depends on raw material composition, which has to be closely monitored to ensure the quality of the cement. Excess free lime, for example, results in undesirable effects such as volume expansion, increased setting time or reduced strength. Several laboratory and online systems can be employed to ensure process control in each step of the cement manufacturing process, including clinker formation.

Inside a World-Class Glass Factory | Taiwan’s Mega Factories EP4
Inside a World-Class Glass Factory | Taiwan’s Mega Factories EP4 Machines 36 विचारों • 1 साल पहले

Glass has been an important material in human societies since its invention over 4,000 years ago. But how is glass made, and why is it still so essential today? This documentary explains how one mega factory in central Taiwan produces high-tech glass products for diverse industries around the world.

Since the opening of its first factory in Hsinchu, Taiwan, the Taiwan Glass Company has expanded to open a total of five factories across northern and central Taiwan. Today, one of these factories houses the first and only float glass line in Taiwan. But how did Taiwan become one of the world’s top glass producers?

Hsinchu, Taiwan is famous for its semiconductor industry. However, in the 1970s, the city was a prominent producer of string light bulbs and decorative glass, producing over 70% of the world’s supply. This industrial dominance was made possible in part due to Taiwan’s large deposits of silica sand, a key material in glass production.

Today, Taiwan Glass’s five factories produce glass products for a variety of applications, including bottles and jars, architectural glass and glass fiber. Each factory employs specialized technology to produce the best glass of its kind. In this documentary, we tour Taiwan Glass to witness their production processes and find out what sets this mega factory apart from its competitors.

Beyond producing new glass, Taiwan Glass also runs its own glass recycling facility, enabling the company to utilize recycled glass in its products without any loss in quality. And when it comes to architectural glass, the company produces all kinds, with various coatings and finishes for designers to choose from. In fact, coated glass panes produced by Taiwan Glass can be seen in the glass curtain walls of many prominent and luxurious skyscrapers worldwide. We show you how these functional coatings are applied and how additional processes allow the glass panes to withstand sun, wind, and heavy storms while looking beautiful for decades.

So, are you ready to find out how glass is made? Then what are you waiting for? Check out our in-depth tour of this Taiwanese mega factory to see why glass remains a crucial material in our societies today.

Join us for a tour of Micron Technology’s Taiwan chip manufacturing facilities to discover how chips are produced and how innovations in the semiconductor industry impact people and businesses all over the world.

Take a look inside one of the semiconductor factories that make Taiwan the most significant site of semiconductor production in the world. Thanks to modern technology and constant innovations, chip manufacturing advances at a rapid pace. Today, each silicon microchip contains over 100 billion transistors, the switches that make up the basic units of computing. Each transistor is just a few nanometers in size, making them a fraction of the size of a human hair.

This means that even the slightest contamination can halt the entire chip production process. In fact, the semiconductor manufacturing process contains over 1,000 steps, all of which must be executed perfectly to produce functional chips. In Micron’s mega factory, silicon wafers are processed with incredible precision. The dustless factory is highly automated, which minimizes the number of humans required to enter. Each silicon wafer is coated in a UV-sensitive liquid, then etched using photolithography. We exhibit the entire process here in high resolution, giving you an inside look into the workings of one of the most high-tech factories in the world.

Micron Technology is a global leader in the semiconductor industry and produces leading-edge memory products. Its neighbor Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) produces industry-leading logic technology. These two companies constitute a large portion of the Taiwanese semiconductor industry, which spans the island from north to south. As they grow and continue to innovate, their products require more and more resources to produce, putting increasing pressure on the environment. Micron leaders share how they are expanding their innovative approach into the area of resource management, enabling them to create more sustainable products.
